The Mallard Ducks are back

The Mallard Ducks are back
Seeing Mallard Ducks show up in the spring “like clockwork” had me wondering just how long this particular pair has been showing up at our pool (still covered) and landscape pond … and how long they live (see below)?  For years ducks show up in the spring, have been chased by our dog Tootsie (for the 17 years of her life), and usually find a place to nest — it is sometimes odd where eggs show up?

Is a Costco membership worth it?

Is a Costco membership worth it?
After one year of Costco Executive membership it was time to ask the “is it worth it” question. Thankfully for us, after one year, it did pay for itself for the first year. For us, at least for the first year, being an Executive Member vs Gold Star Member at Costco did pay off, but we also bought too much stuff! So how about in 2024? After my back of the envelope calculations came up with a net gain of $26 for 2023, it was time to think about 2024; Do we upgrade or downgrade?

CIRP - Silicon Valley Bank Collapse

Another attempt to try to include re-posted financial-advice marketing commentary from Contrarian Outlook to a personal Raspberry Pi server for archival and reading. What the Silicon Valley Bank Collapse Means … Michael Foster, Investment Strategist Updated: March 16, 2023 The Silicon Valley Bank (SIVB) mess has demonstrated exactly why we need to invest in closed-end funds (CEFs): these funds yield 8.1% on average, giving us an income stream that can get us through market volatility, like we’re seeing now.

CIRP - Typora Table Test TWO

RichC
While viewing a wide table view on a website after posting a table last week, I was curious as to how Markdown would handle a copy/paste wide table - (tweaked - had to narrow and eliminate columns to fit the width). I’ve updated from a previous post to reflect March 2023 information. Also check this LINK to see if it opens a new RDC Personal Font tab.Contrarian Income Report Portfolio

The Remarkable Life of Poon Lim

RichC
EXCERPT => “On November 23, 1942, the Royal Navy destroyer SS Benlomond was torpedoed by a German submarine. Poon Lim, a Chinese civilian seaman aboard the ship, found himself stranded in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Against all odds, Poon Lim survived 133 days at sea before being rescued by Brazilian fishermen. This blog post will take a closer look at Poon Lim’s remarkable life and story."

A curved glass bird feeder idea

RichC
For those with with a love for feeding birds and access to a curved piece of glass (or perhaps the ability to heat and curve plexiglass???) … here’s an interesting project idea. Click on image for a short .mp4 video Although having this bird feeder in your window might get old after a while, it would be a great idea for those shut-in or able to convince an assisted living facility to be able to put this in a window.

Working with MarsEdit for MyDesultoryBlog.com

RichC
This is a test only post from a new to me Mac app called MarsEdit. It is similar to my much loved Open Live Writer on Windows, but without a few of the features or ablity to preview the blog format while typing. Still I’m going to give it a try and see if I can adjust to it. Just added my own macro to MarsEdit with the “Read More” tag to split posts (missing).

Blame Noah Webster

RichC
You would think that after 60+ years that I would comfortably remember which spelling of for the past tense of ‘cancel’ was the common American English version and which was British English version. When it comes to a few words that I stumble over, I still need to check with Merriam-Webster. British vs. American English Another fine example that has answers of varying degrees of complexity is the question of how many Ls one should use in the past or present participle form of the verb cancel.

Additional leverage when turning a screwdriver

Additional leverage when turning a screwdriver
Here’s a tool tip that isn’t widely known: If you need a little more screwdriver leverage  … or your hands are slippery … check to see if a hex socket or wrench will fit on the handle of your screwdriver to give you a little additional torque (a 1” socket works for my standard Craftsman screwdriver). Just be sure you have enough down-pressure on the screwdrivers as with all the addition torque it is easy to strip out the fastener heads … be they straight blade or Philips heads.
